In fact, 16 percent of Americans believe that the world as we know it will end in 2012. According to the same poll, 67 percent of Americans believe human actions are more likely to bring about the end of the world.

Only 33 percent of respondents said that divine intervention would play a role in the apocalypse. These polls reflect an increasingly strong belief in the ancient predictions of the Mayan people based on their calendar.

The Mayans, known for their advances in mathematics and astronomy, used a calendar that lasts 5,126 years. The Mayan calendar, when translated into the Gregorian calendar format we use today, runs out on Dec. 21, 2012.
